Straw Bale Constructionspace This load-bearing straw bale home features a space heating system that consists of a food- and heat-producing greenhouse on the south face and a site-built masonry heater with a cross-fire core. A solar domestic hot water system was roughed in at the initial construction by ThermoDynamics Ltd.

Re-use was key to material choices: salvaged lumber was used for the window and door buck framing, reclaimed brick makes up the facade of the masonry heater and the hearth is salvaged marble from a shopping mall renovation.
The building envelope is almost as tight as an R2000 house (under 2.0 ACH), and the thermal properties of the house give it excellent heat retention, sound isolation and energy efficiency. The monolithic slab is fully insulated with 2" of foam board, 18" wide straw bales give an overall R value of 30 to 40, and there is R50 blown in cellulose in the ceiling. The Thermotech window frames are insulated and the glazing is double pane, low-e with argon fill and insulating spacers. Straw Bale Constructionspace
